Tales From the Road: Georgia QBs

By Radi Nabulsi

Tales From the Road spotlights players who stand out to RecruitingNation writers at camps, combines and various events. Here is a look at a few Georgia quarterbacks who recently performed at a high level:

DeShaun Watson
Deshaun Watson earned an Elite 11 Finals invite on the spot at the Atlanta regional.
QB Deshaun Watson
Vital stats: 2014 / Gainesville (Ga.) High School / 6-foot-3, 186 pounds

Considering: Committed to Clemson

Where we saw him: Atlanta Elite 11

What impressed: Watson would not sweat wearing a parka in the desert. He remains cool even in the heat of competition. He was the only quarterback out of the more than 60 in attendance that was offered an invitation to the Elite 11 competition on the spot. Even the other quarterbacks were impressed with his accuracy and calm.

Why you should keep an eye out for him: Watson took the starting job at Gainesville as a freshman and has never looked back. In three years he set the state record for passing yards and touchdowns. Simply put, he is a game changer and Georgia and Ohio State are going to recruit him until the minute he signs, Clemson commitment or not.

QB Tyler Harris
Vital stats: 2014 / Pierce County (Ga.) High School / 6-3, 219

Considering: Offers from Alabama, Troy, USF, Kentucky, Mississippi State

Where we saw him: Atlanta Elite 11/Atlanta NFTC

What impressed: There was little question as to Harris’ arm strength coming into the Elite 11 competition. When the camp was over, Harris had also demonstrated his deep ball accuracy and the ability to throw on the run. He moved up into the top group of performers after making some tough throws in the wind.

Why you should keep an eye out for him: Alabama was the first school to offer Harris, ensuring that the Crimson Tide will remain in the running until he makes a decision. A number of schools have asked Harris to come to their camps over the summer where he will likely earn even more offers. He feels South Carolina could be the next school to extend a verbal offer.

QB Stephen Collier
Vital stats: 2014 / Lee County (Ga.) High School / 6-4, 215

Considering: Offers from Marshall, Troy, MTSU, Harvard and Louisiana Tech

Where we saw him: Atlanta Elite 11/Atlanta NFTC

What impressed: Many of the drills at the Elite 11 force a quarterback to make snap decisions and throw to the lighted targets. Not only did Collier excel in those drills, but the passes were delivered quickly and accurately.

Why you should keep an eye out for him: Quarterbacks need to be smart and Collier has a 4.2 GPA that has earned him an offer from Harvard. He is driven on the field as well, competing on back-to-back days at the Elite 11 and then the NFTC. He was named the quarterback MVP of the NFTC after dominating the half pass-skeleton drill. The spring evaluation period could lead to a number of new offers for Collier.

QB Price Wilson
Vital stats: 2014 / Walton Senior (Ga.) High School / 6-1, 218

Considering: Offers from Eastern Kentucky, Louisiana Tech and Marshall

Where we saw him: Atlanta Elite 11/Atlanta NFTC

What impressed: Wilson was repeatedly praised by the coaches at the Elite 11 for making strong throws with great ending velocity and on target. His footwork was technically sound and he received praise for that as well. Wilson did not fold when placed into the final drill called the Pressure Cooker, which is reserved for the top performers. In fact, the harder he was pushed, the better Wilson responded.

Why you should keep an eye out for him: Some schools may have written Wilson off since he isn’t one of the tall quarterbacks in the Class of 2014. Those schools should reconsider. Wilson took over a Walton team when Alabama signee Parker McLeod was injured and demonstrated great decision making skills and leadership. Look for his offer list to grow substantially this summer.
