Ohio WR Kief takes in Tide spring practice
By Jared Shanker
When Alabama offered Derek Kief (Cincinnati/LaSalle) three weeks ago, the junior receiver immediately scheduled a visit to the Crimson Tide. Kief was most looking forward to seeing how the Tide practiced considering they have won three of the last four national championships.
The 6-foot-5, 180-pound Kief got his chance to watch the Tide work last weekend on his trip to Tuscaloosa.
“It’s all business,” Kief said. “They’re very disciplined, and it shows if you do that, it’ll help you win.”
Overall, Kief said the visit went “really great,” and he enjoyed his time at Alabama. Kief spent much of his visit hanging out and talking with new Tide receivers coach Billy Napier, who could be the next great recruiter in the SEC. Kief had an eye on the receivers in practice and was impressed with the route running of the Tide’s corps.
While Napier is still getting accustomed to Alabama, he told Kief he knows the Tide’s recruiting board at receiver well enough to know Kief is toward the top of it.
“He let me know that I’m one of the top receivers on their board, and I could really help out the team,” Kief said.
With 17 offers, Kief said he is not trimming his list yet, but he will soon, after a few more visits. He will visit Ohio State on Saturday.
Louisville could receive a visit at some point, as the Cardinals are the latest offer for Kief. Cardinals offensive coordinator Shawn Watson and Kief spoke for the first time Wednesday, and Watson let Kief know the school wanted to offer.
“He was telling me how he likes me at the position,” Kief said, and I had an offer earlier but it got mixed up and they never let me know about it. He reaffirmed it.”
