Introducing the class: A'Shawn Robinson

By Greg Ostendorf

Editor's note: This is a series introducing Alabama's 2013 recruiting class that will continue to run after signing day.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- ESPN 150 defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson was committed to Texas for nearly a year when he decided to reopen his recruitment just a week before national signing day. The move surprised everybody. It also opened the door for Alabama, and with the help of an elephant mascot, Robinson chose the Crimson Tide on signing day. He’s versatile enough to play on either side of the ball, but he’s expected to start out at defensive end.

Q: What made you sign with Alabama?

A: They win. That’s all they do is win. I like the coaching staff, the players there, and I can play for a good team.

DT A'Shawn Robinson is hoping to make a big impact at Alabama.
Q: What’s life been like since your commitment?

A: It’s been good. Life’s been life. I’m meeting new people and stuff. The Alabama fans are talking me up on Twitter and Facebook. The Texas fans are mad, but I mean, I’ve got to do what’s best for me, not what’s best for them. They’re not playing. I am.

Q: When did you first meet Coach Saban? What was that like?

A: It was my junior year, two weeks before the junior day, when he came to my school. It was pretty cool. It was Coach Saban. He had just won a national championship, and he came to my school. I was pretty surprised.

Q: What’s your favorite Alabama memory to this point?

A: My favorite memory was when they played LSU because it was two of the top schools in the country going to head to head. People watch that game more than they watch any other game in college football.

Q: What’s your goal when you get to Alabama?

A: To work hard and see if I can get out there on the field and play early.

Q: Do you have a favorite play or memory from high school?

A: My favorite game was probably my first year of varsity, we were in the playoffs and I started. I was a sophomore. I did real well. I had two sacks and four tackles for a loss.

Q: What was your reaction to Coach Groh leaving for the NFL?

A: I just saw it. I was surprised. He was a cool person. He had fun when it was time to have fun, but he was serious, too, when it was time to be serious.
