Georgia quick to offer Watch List RB

By Radi Nabulsi

Many high school prospects are evaluated for months or even years before a college program extends a scholarship offer. Highlights from sophomore seasons are compared to those of junior seasons to see progression and potential. Players who make a name for themselves as juniors are visited as seniors to gauge their possible impact at the next level. And then there are prospects like Joe Mixon (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) for whom the entire process takes three or maybe four days.

Joe Mixon continues to rack up scholarship offers.
“The offer from Georgia came on Wednesday,” Mixon said. “I called them on Monday and they said to call them back on Wednesday. So I called around lunchtime on Thursday and spoke to coach [Bryan] McClendon, and he offered me. I know how the program did last year. I watched a couple of their games last year. And I know about Todd Gurley. He is rough."

The ESPN Watch List running back had a similar turn of events with Ohio State.

“That was a quick offer,” Mixon said. “I talked to them on Sunday and they said they would get back to me. So I sent them my film on Monday, and the coaches had a staff meeting on Wednesday. That was when they evaluated my film in front of all the coaches. After that they got in contact with me and offered me that day.”

The story was repeated at Ole Miss where the timeline from initial contact to offer spanned four days. The same scenario might play out at Alabama on Saturday.

“They have just started to come around. I talked to them Tuesday and then I talked to them on Wednesday,” Mixon said. “They want me to call [on Saturday] so I can talk to Nick Saban.”

Mixon has offers from 29 programs so far and says he is receptive to playing anywhere.

“It doesn’t matter where I play, so long as I have the best support of my family, the best support of my coaches and the best support for my academics in the classroom,” Mixon said. “I will be narrowing down the offers in either a month or two months from now. Georgia will be in that group. I have a lot of interest in them. I have a lot of interest in Alabama, too.”

The 6-foot-1, 191-pound junior plans to take some visits soon.

“I know for a fact I will be going to the Cal junior day next month,” Mixon said. “I’ll definitely be taking a trip to Georgia, and I am going to the Nike camp for sure and to try to get invited to The Opening.”

Mixon tallied 1,450 yards rushing, more than 400 yards receiving and returned both a punt and an interception for scores last season. He finished the season with 30 touchdowns.
