Rewind: Alabama closing in on top class

By Greg Ostendorf

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- It was the last weekend before signing day, and although the University of Alabama hosted just one official visitor, there has been quite a bit of excitement surrounding the Crimson Tide program over the last couple of days.

Five-star defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes, Alabama’s lone official visitor, enjoyed his visit to Tuscaloosa. The California native tweeted about it throughout the weekend.

Eddie Vanderdoes enjoyed his official visit to Alabama during the weekend.
“Man I love it out here in T-town,” Vanderdoes tweeted. ‘Idk why everyone was saying I wouldn’t love the South haha. I fit in perfect here. #RTR.”

The ESPN 150 star spent time with Nick Saban and the rest of the UA coaches. He took a photo next to the Heisman trophy. He met former Tide star Dont’a Hightower, and he got a look at the new weight room.

Sources say Vanderdoes’ decision will come down to either Alabama or Notre Dame. He’s expected to announce on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT.

Although Vanderdoes was the only official visitor, that didn’t stop a pair of ESPN 150 stars from making a surprise visit to Tuscaloosa over the weekend.

Multiple sources confirmed that top Tide targets Reuben Foster and Alvin Kamara both made their way to Alabama’s campus on Saturday night. Foster was in the middle of his official visit to Auburn when he left for UA. The former Tide and Tiger commitment is expected to announce his decision on Monday at 9 p.m. CT.

On top of all that, the biggest news of the weekend came from ESPN 150 defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson.

On Sunday, he confirmed that he had decommitted from Texas and was no longer considering the Longhorns. He also eliminated USC from his list, leaving Alabama as the team to beat for his signature come Wednesday.

“I talked to my mom about it. We decided a couple days ago,” Robinson said. “When Coach [Bo] Davis came, I wanted to tell him to his face. All I told him was I couldn’t come to Texas, that Texas wasn’t the best fit for me.”

Elsewhere, former Auburn commitment and in-state defensive lineman Dee Liner did not visit Georgia as talked about during the week. Liner is expected to sign with Alabama on Wednesday.

The Tide might also be trending late for ESPN 150 stars Montravius Adams and Antonio Conner. Adams took an official visit to Auburn over the weekend and trimmed his list to four -- Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Georgia.

“Alabama, everybody knows it’s a great place,” Adams said after his Auburn visit. “I talked to the coaches and they said they would give me a chance to come in and play. They’ve got that great tradition of winning. That’s what I want to do, win, and they’ve got some of the best coaches in the league, and I know they can help me get in the league.”

Both Adams and Conner will announce their decision on ESPNU during signing day.
