Introducing the class: Tyren Jones

By Greg Ostendorf

Editor's note: This is a series introducing Alabama's 2013 recruiting class that will run through signing day.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama already has three players committed to play running back and could add one more before signing day, but that hasn’t deterred ESPN 150 back Tyren Jones, who gave his verbal pledge to the Crimson Tide in February. Jones has proven to be one of the top rushers in the state of Georgia over the last two years, and he’s looking to take that success with him to Tuscaloosa.

Q: What made you commit to Alabama?

Tyren Jones
Tide commit Tyren Jones said he likes the way he will be able to fit into Alabama's scheme.
A: When I first got committed, I was kind of between Alabama and Georgia, and I was considering Clemson in my top three. When I got to Alabama, I kind of fell in love with it. Everything fit me. The reason I committed was because I went by how many running backs they had at that time -- who was coming in, who was leaving, how can I fit in and the system they were running. I just felt like it was the best fit for me, so that’s why I made the decision.

Q: What’s life been like since your commitment?

A: It’s been good. It was a big relief after I committed. I know a couple schools were still coming after me and some new schools like LSU, but I wasn’t really tripping about that. Other than that, it’s been real nice. When I go up there, they treat me nice. Everyone’s nice up there. It’s been good. I love it.

Q: When did you first meet Coach Saban? What was that like?

A: He came to my school before my junior day. It was kind of exciting because I’ve seen him before at camps and stuff like that, but we couldn’t talk. When I first went up there and had a conversation, I didn’t really know. I heard people saying he was real strict or whatever, but he was cracking jokes. We had a good conversation. We were talking football and life.

Q: What’s your favorite Alabama memory to this point?

A: My favorite memory was probably when we played Georgia for the SEC championship this year. My teammate is Brandon Kublanow. When he committed [to Georgia], he was trying to get me to go there, I was trying to get him to come here. It’s like a rivalry between us. We talk smack to each other. Before the game starts, he sent me all these text messages just messing with me. Every good play we made, I would send him a text message, and he was doing the same thing. It felt like I was playing almost.

Q: What’s your goal when you get to Alabama?

A: My goal -- I’m going in, trying to compete for a starting position, get some playing time. From there, once I step on the field and touch the ball, just do whatever I can to show my talent and help my team win.

Q: Do you have a favorite play or memory from high school?

A: It was probably last year when we beat Lassiter for the second time. The first time felt good, but the second time was probably the best because it was the playoffs. We were down, and I had a long run that kind of put the game away.
