Bama expected to offer Watch List star

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- On Thursday, Alabama head coach Nick Saban and defensive coordinator Kirby Smart made a stop at Cedar Grove High School in Georgia to see 2014 ESPN Watch List defensive end Bryson Allen-Williams.

The Crimson Tide coaches couldn’t speak with the Peach State prospect, but they told his coach that they wanted to extend a scholarship offer. A formal offer is expected to come from Saban at Alabama’s junior day this weekend.

“It’s a great feeling,” Allen-Williams said. “Alabama is the best program in college football -- back-to-back national champions, three out of four years -- who doesn’t want to want to go play for Alabama?”

Although he plays defensive end in high school, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Allen-Williams wants to play outside linebacker at the next level. It’s also the position that Alabama likes him at if he chooses to go there.

“Coach Smart told my coach he plans on using me as an outside linebacker,” Allen-Williams said. “He said he loves my film. He loves what I do on the field. He loves my motor, loves my intensity. I’m all for playing linebacker.”

However, despite the scholarship the offer, Alabama didn’t take over the top spot in his recruitment. That still belongs to South Carolina, one of the first schools to offer him.

“To me, my recruitment started in August on the first day when Florida and South Carolina offered me,” Allen-Williams said. “I feel like since South Carolina offered me on the first day, it’s not right just because Alabama offered to let them come in and take the top spot.

“South Carolina is my leader right now. They’re a defensive school. They put out defensive players, and they have great defensive talent. I want to go play for a school like that. I could see myself at South Carolina.”

Allen-Williams visited both Alabama and South Carolina this past fall as well as Florida, Georgia, North Carolina State and Tennessee.

This weekend, he will be joined by fellow Watch List stars Nick Glass and Demarre Kitt on the ride to Tuscaloosa.
