During the summer, TideNation will analyze each of the scholarship players on the Alabama roster -- excluding the Tide's 2013 recruiting class -- in our Crimson Countdown series. Starting with No. 1 Dee Hart, we will go through the roster numerically, finishing with No. 99 Brandon Ivory.
No. 99 Adam Griffith
Redshirt freshman kicker
Expectations for 2013: With both Cade Foster and Jeremy Shelley going well, Alabama wasn't forced to burn a year of eligibility for Griffith in 2012. Instead, the former top-10 kicker out of Calhoun, Ga., went through the motions at practice and waited his turn. Now that Shelley is gone, Griffin is in a position to compete with Foster for the Tide's short-term kicking duties.
Best-case scenario: Early this spring Saban said that Griffith had "certainly shown that he has that potential," and noted the opportunity to compete throughout the five-week practice period. And the competition between Griffith and Foster was good, Saban said, adding that each player had plenty of opportunities. The decision of who will fit what roles, though, won't come until late in fall camp. The good news is Saban believes that both are capable, "so we have no problem and we have every confidence in both guys to do it," he said.
Worst-case scenario: What you see in practice is one thing. What you see during the game is something entirely different. While Griffith might look good in front of coaches and teammates, it remains to be seen how he handles the bright lights of SEC stadiums. He might have to find out soon if Foster's streak of missing field goals continues. The veteran kicker went 0-for-3 in the final 10 games of the season, leaving many to wonder what his confidence will be like in 2013.
Future impact: Griffith should be especially eager to prove himself this season if he wants to have a leg up in 2014. J.K. Scott (Denver/J.K. Mullen), the No. 3-ranked kicker in the country in the 2014 class, committed to Alabama in June and should arrive on campus ready to compete to be both the starting punter and kickoff specialist.
