MOBILE, Ala. -- Fort Walton Beach, Fla., defensive back John Marvin is hoping to see his recruitment take off soon, and he may have expedited the process on Sunday with an impressive performance at Mobile’s Nike Football SPARQ Combine.
Marvin ran a 4.66 40-yard dash, a 4.25 shuttle, threw the power ball 33 feet and posted a 36.3-inch vertical jump for a combined overall score of 96.72, the third-highest score at the event among the 2012 prospects.
“This is my first time doing this,” Marvin said. “I’ve heard that coaches look at SPARQ ratings, and on questionnaires, they ask about it, so now I’ll be able to tell them whenever they ask me what my SPARQ rating is. Hopefully, I’ll get some more offers and more interest from it.”
Marvin has offers from Florida International, Louisville, South Florida and Troy, and he thinks Central Florida may be next. He’s also been receiving interest from BCS powers Alabama and Ohio State.
The Florida native visited Tuscaloosa for UA’s first junior day in January. He says the Crimson Tide would be his top school if they were to offer a scholarship.
“The junior day was good,” Marvin said. “I like the environment and everything there, the coaches and all that. They all told me about it. I’m going to go back up there for a camp, but Bama seems like a good place. I’d go there if they offered me. Who wouldn’t?
“I think I’m close (to an offer). I think the interest has sparked up a little bit in the past two weeks because a lot has been going on the last month in the recruiting world, and Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt told me to start calling him every week.”
Although Marvin played the majority of last season at safety for Fort Walton Beach High School, Alabama likes the 6-foot-1, 188-pound prospect as a cornerback.
“They want me as a corner mainly because of my height and my length,” Marvin said. “Louisville offered me as a corner, and USF offered me as a safety, so it really doesn’t matter.”
Marvin plans to take another visit to Tuscaloosa for the Tide’s spring game in April.
