With all of the talent coming from Georgia for 2013, the Crimson Tide is making the Peach State a priority in recruiting. Alabama already has the commitment of one of the state’s top players in Reuben Foster, and a plethora of other top Georgia prospects are on the Tide’s radar. UA hosted a number of those recruits Saturday for its second junior day, and TideNation caught up with three of the players who made the trip.
WR Burse close to an offer
Alpharetta, Ga., wide receiver Carlos Burse didn’t get the scholarship offer he was hoping for Saturday when he visited the University of Alabama, but he feels like the Crimson Tide may still be close to offering.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Florida Atlantic Owls humming around the Joe this weekend bore a striking resemblance to a flock of Chicken Littles, predicting the downfall of Alabama baseball.
But take a deep breath. It isn’t that bad.
Florida Atlantic sweeping the Crimson Tide in a three-game series to start the year isn’t totally unheard of. It’s just been a while.
It’s been 60 years since something like that has happened at Alabama. In 1952, the Tide started out 0-3, finishing the season two games above .500. (That last bit is what you’d call the “bright side” of things.)
But losing a three-game series at home to start the year? That has never occurred in Alabama history.

ESPNU 150 Watchlist member DeMarcus Walker has over a dozen offers, including one from the Crimson Tide. This weekend, the highly coveted defensive end from Florida made his first ever trip to the University of Alabama campus for junior day.
“It was fun,” Walker said of his time in Tuscaloosa. “It was a good experience. I hung out with the coaches and hung out with the players. The highlight was hanging out with Reuben Foster and sitting down one-on-one with Coach (Nick) Saban. Alabama is a great school.”
Foster, a five-star on ESPN.com, committed to the Crimson Tide last July. He was scheduled to visit Gainesville for Florida’s junior day on Saturday but changed his plans and attended UA’s junior day instead.

The University of Alabama’s search for a quarterback continues, and a new name popped up on Saturday when the Crimson Tide offered Mobile, Ala., athlete Jason Smith during his visit for junior day.
Smith, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect, played quarterback for McGill Toolen High School last year, but many felt he would end up at wide receiver or defensive back at the next level. But UA head coach Nick Saban made it clear that he likes Smith to start out as a quarterback.
“It felt good just to sit down and talk with the man,” Smith said. “He told me I could come in and play quarterback, and that’s what I wanted to come in as. He was just saying that I’m a great athlete and I have talent."

Even though Saturday was junior day at the University of Alabama, the Crimson Tide coaching staff also welcomed a couple of elite sophomores on campus.
Defensive back Todd Kelly Jr. was one of the 2014 prospects who made the trip to Tuscaloosa, and he received some good news when UA head coach Nick Saban offered him a scholarship to play at Alabama.
“Before, Coach (Lance) Thompson told me that he expected me to get offered, but hearing it from Coach Saban, a legend in college football, that was just amazing,” Kelly said. “I was real excited.

2013 defensive back Vonn Bell has seen his stock soar in the last two months. He went from a relative unknown to a top prospect in Georgia, and his offer list continues to grow every day.
On Saturday, he was in Tuscaloosa for the Crimson Tide’s junior day. It was the first junior day he’s been able to make this year and his first visit since schools started taking notice of his talents.
“It went very well, a very good experience for me and my mom,” Bell said. “I got to meet the coaching staff and see what Alabama has to offer. I had a good meeting with Coach Nick Saban. Everything went very well today.

Huntsville, Ala., offensive lineman Grant Hill has been to the University of Alabama plenty of times, but Saturday’s visit during the Tide’s junior day gave him a chance to see a different side of the program.
“It was good, really exciting,” Hill said. “I got to tour all of the facilities. I got to see the campus when it’s not a game-day atmosphere. It’s really nice, and it’s nice to see when it’s not a game day. I really got a look into what it’s like to be a student-athlete there. You go in and you look at where you go to school, where you go to class, where you eat.”
The visit must have made a favorable impression on Hill because afterwards, the rising 2013 star admitted the Crimson Tide is his top school over other offers from schools like Auburn, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

It’s been quite the week for Marietta, Ga., defensive back Brendan Langley.
The 2013 prospect received offers from Georgia and South Carolina on Tuesday, Mississippi and Tennessee on Wednesday, Alabama on Thursday, and Florida on Friday before capping the week off with a visit to Tuscaloosa on Saturday for the Crimson Tide’s junior day.
“It was a phenomenal time,” Langley said. “Coach (Nick) Saban and Coach (Kirby) Smart did a very good job of making me feel at home and extremely comfortable. I didn’t have any doubts coming into it, and I definitely don’t have any doubts coming out.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Crimson Tide fans at Sewell-Thomas Stadium a caught glimpse of the future of Alabama baseball on Friday night in the season opener against Florida Atlantic. For coach Mitch Gaspard’s sake, he better hope it’s not the entire picture of what’s to come.
Alabama muscled just four hits and allowed three unearned runs in a 5-2 loss to FAU. UA committed two errors, squandering two strong outings from Tide pitchers.
Freshman starting pitcher Taylor Guilbeau took the loss despite throwing 5 strong innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run. The tall lefty showed off a good fastball and a deceptive changeup on his way to 4 strikeouts. In two bases loaded situations, he surrendered just one run.
Gaspard said he was pleased with his outing and how he was capable of working out of jams.
“That’s one reason why he got the ball tonight,” Gaspard said. “He’s a really good competitor and he’s got a very good mentality on the mound. He showed some of that tonight.”
The wheels came off in the top of the sixth inning for Alabama. Guilbeau was lifted after reaching his pitch count limit, and Trey Pilkington came on in relief. Pilkington struck out the first batter he faced but then gave up starting with back-to-back singles. Pilkington took care of the next batter but a throwing error by third baseman A.J. Cole allowed two runs to cross the plate. Another run scored when Mike Spano hit a single off the right field wall.
Alabama was able to come back in the following inning and load the bases with no outs. But a 6-4-3 double play and a strikeout killed the rally with just two runs plated -- one by way of a pass ball.
FAU starting pitcher Ryan Garton finished with 1 earned run in 6 innings pitched. He gave up just 3 hits.
Gaspard said after the game that he wasn’t worried about his offense, holding to the belief that the batting order will be his team’s strength in 2012.
“Offensively, we’ll find that rhythm,” Gaspard said. “I know this will be a good offensive team. Tonight was one of those tough nights. ... We never got into the flow.”
Jake Hubbard, Jason Zylstra and Ian Gardeck pitched the final three innings, allowing only one hit in the process. Hubbard, a freshman, pitched well, but it was the junior college transfer that stole the show.
Gardeck, who spent last year at Angelina College in Illinois, showed off his mid- to upper-90s fastball against FAU. He struck out the side in the ninth inning, using primarily the heater.
“He was pretty good tonight,” Gaspard said of Gardeck, flashing an ear-to-ear grin. “If we can get that out of Gardeck, we’re going to be fine in the back of the game. I don’t know what his velocity was but it was hard.”
Brett Booth said catching Gardeck is a blast, describing his fastball as “exploding out of his hand.” While the crowd stood in a shocked appreciation of Gardeck’s 3-strikeout performance, Booth said he was anything but surprised.
“We’re probably going to see a lot of that this year,” Booth said.
Alabama will host the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT. Junior Charley Sullivan will start for the Tide.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- University of Alabama pitcher Taylor Wolfe will miss the entire 2012 season after having season-ending Tommy John surgery on his left elbow on Thursday morning.
The Columbus, Ga., navite finished 2011 with a 4-4 record and a 5.01 ERA, and entered this season with a chance at cracking the starting rotation. The loss of Wolfe further depletes the Tide's pitching experience. Alabama lost its entire starting rotation to graduation and the amateur draft. Two freshmen will start in the opening series against Florida Atlantic and a third could emerge by the time conference play begins.
Wolfe had 95 strikeouts in 91.2 career innings pitched. He started 17 games in 2011.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University of Alabama has an opportunity to right the ship on Saturday when Tennessee comes to town for the 12:30 p.m. tipoff. The Crimson Tide (16-9, 5-6) have lost two straight games and have taken a step back in their journey to the NCAA tournament.
Alabama currently sits tied with Harvard at 35th in RPI, nationally, and bracketologist Joe Lunardi recently dropped the Tide to a projected 10th seed in the tournament. A win against the Vols would go a long way in rebuilding the team's resume after a slew of player suspensions and back-to-back conference losses.
Tennessee is riding a four-game winning streak, and if the Tide hopes end it, here are three keys to accomplishing that feat:
