Alabama Crimson Tide: Stanford Cardinal

Recruiting the right quarterback means a tremendous amount to every college football program.

In the Class of 2015, the race has been on for months for programs in need of signal-callers.

With the calendar having turned to June, there are more than 55 quarterbacks who have given verbal commitments to FBS programs.

Most recently, Florida snagged West Coast prospect Sheriron Jones over the weekend. In all, 39 of 62 programs in the Power Five conferences have QB commitments, and more are on the way.

ESPN 300 offensive lineman Ross Pierschbacher (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) committed to Iowa back in January, but that didn’t stop other schools from coming after him. Both Alabama and Stanford extended scholarship offers after his decision, leaving a sense of doubt in the back of his mind.

For reassurance, Pierschbacher scheduled visits to both schools for this week. He wrapped up his trip to Alabama on Wednesday night. It was his second trip to Tuscaloosa.

DALLAS -- Forget the riddles of the Sphinx. Try cracking the riddles of the Nick Watkins (Dallas/Bishop Dunne).

When it comes to deciphering where the ESPN 150 cornerback plays college football, one old adage comes to mind. As nice and media-friendly as Watkins is, he is the riddle wrapped up in an enigma when it comes to recruiting.

And Watkins’ ability to keep most in the dark about his process is not an accident.

CARMEL, Ind. -- Austin Roberts goes to Carmel High School, but Indiana is not his home. He was born in Dallas, but that’s not his home, either. The closest thing to home would be the state of Florida, but he lived in three different cities and was there for a little more than half of his life. The other half was spent moving from city to city.

That’s the life you live when your father coaches in the NFL. Alfredo Roberts, Austin’s father, is currently the tight ends coach for the Indianapolis Colts.

NORCROSS, Ga. -- ESPN 150 defensive end Lorenzo Carter seems to never stop grinning, even on the football field. His 100-megawatt smile calls to mind another affable defensive end, Michael Strahan, complete with the trademark gap. Even a shoving match with a teammate resulted in Carter falling down laughing about it later.

During the Norcross spring game on Friday, Carter and offensive tackle Horatio Walker tangled as they went at each other in the trenches. Walker held Carter’s jersey and was rewarded with a shot to the helmet.

“Well it was a run, and I don’t think Horatio respects me on the run yet, but it is all good,” Carter said between guffaws. “He tried to bully me around, but I was not having that so I had to hit him back. I was having fun out there.”

videoSANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Keller Chryst (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) has plenty of history to follow.

His grandfather, George Chryst, was a longtime high school football coach and the head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. His father, Geep Chryst, is the quarterback coach of the San Francisco 49ers. His uncle, Paul Chryst, is the head coach at Pittsburgh. Another uncle, Rick Chryst, was the commissioner of the Mid-American Conference for 10 years. And if that wasn’t enough, Chryst was named after a football icon: Michael Keller Ditka, Jr.

Yet, with all the potential fanfare surrounding his family and upbringing, Keller, the No. 2 quarterback in the country, has found a way to stay off the grid, far removed from the usual media and recruiting attention that comes with being one of the nation’s top quarterback recruits.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- A month ago, Jonathan Hilliman released a top 10. He is slowly whittling his list to a final school.

“It’s coming down to seven. I dropped some schools,” Hilliman said. “We narrowed it down so we could go out and see these places and get a feel for who’s who and who’s interested and who’s not.”
