AUBURN, Ala. -- It was a busy week for 2015 quarterback Tyler Queen (Kennesaw, Ga./North Cobb), who probably feels as if his arm is ready to fall off. In five days, he camped at Alabama, Auburn and Georgia where he threw for the coaches at all three schools.

ATHENS, Ga. -- While his teammates competed in the Gwinnett versus Georgia 7-on-7 tournament at Central Gwinnett (Ga.) High School on Saturday, ESPN 150 defensive end Lorenzo Carter took a scheduled trip to the University of Georgia. While his Norcross (Ga.) Blue Devils did not need him to win the tournament, they will need him if they want to win back-to-back state titles. Carter heard a variation on that theme while spending time with Mark Richt.

“He told me I could win a national championship for my state,” Carter said. “He said I could do it anywhere but it would be even sweeter if I did it for the state of Georgia.”

Carter has won two state basketball championships and a Class AAAAAA football championship, amassing a lot of jewelry in his prep career. Richt showed of some of his own.

NORCROSS, Ga. -- ESPN 150 defensive end Lorenzo Carter seems to never stop grinning, even on the football field. His 100-megawatt smile calls to mind another affable defensive end, Michael Strahan, complete with the trademark gap. Even a shoving match with a teammate resulted in Carter falling down laughing about it later.

During the Norcross spring game on Friday, Carter and offensive tackle Horatio Walker tangled as they went at each other in the trenches. Walker held Carter’s jersey and was rewarded with a shot to the helmet.

“Well it was a run, and I don’t think Horatio respects me on the run yet, but it is all good,” Carter said between guffaws. “He tried to bully me around, but I was not having that so I had to hit him back. I was having fun out there.”

HOOVER, Ala. -- Five-star cornerback Marlon Humphrey has been without a cell phone for over a month now. While most of his classmates at Hoover High School would be lost without their cell phone, Humphrey has actually embraced not having it. He doesn’t have to deal with the constant phone calls from college coaches and recruiting services every night.

Most believe that’s why he turned his phone off, but in reality, he broke one phone, lost another, and his father Bobby said he’s not getting a new one until the family plan changes next month.

“Looking back, it’s probably one of the better things that’s happened because over the summer when he had a phone, I think that’s when he got a little bit overwhelmed,” Bobby Humphrey said. “So it may be a good thing for him. I guess that’s why he’s been so calm.”

CALERA, Ala. -- Spring practice just wrapped up for ESPN 150 athlete Ronnie Clark, and he put an exclamation point on it last week with three rushing touchdowns for Calera High School in the first half of their spring game.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound athlete is playing quarterback this year for the Eagles, but he is being recruited as a defensive player for the next level, either as a linebacker or a safety.

With basketball season over, the No. 1 prospect in Florida can finally hit the road to check out some college campuses. The No. 12 overall prospect in the ESPN 150 David Sharpe (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence School) has no shortage of options to choose from.

During spring break, Sharpe visited in-state Florida and Florida State. Over the weekend, he spent time at two out-of-state programs. Sharpe got to Clemson on Friday morning and stayed there until Saturday morning. He then spent the rest of the day in Athens, Ga., before visiting with some family in Georgia.

CRAWFORDVILLE, Fla. -- He's only a freshman, but Wakulla wide receiver Keith Gavin has already garnered offers from Florida State, Florida, Clemson, South Carolina and Ole Miss.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound 2016 prospect is just starting the recruiting process but has caught the eye of many college across the southeast.

"It's been crazy," Gavin said. "Just about every week I've been having a different coach come to see me and watch me practice."

Gavin acknowledges that it's still too early to narrow down his choices, but he admits there is a school he grew up rooting for.

It was the latest in a series of battles between schools that clash again and again on the recruiting trail, year after year. Both have targeted a sophomore defensive tackle from North Carolina. Holding more than 40 offers, running back Joe Mixon (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) is arguably the most sought-after recruit in the West region. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound, four-star back is the top running back in the West and the No. 135 player in the country. His offer sheet has seemingly grown by the minute this spring, but he isn't in any hurry to narrow it down.

Despite tweeting out a list of 16 programs several weeks ago, Mixon said Sunday that he only did that to highlight the schools recruiting him the hardest, not anything to be taken as a group of finalists.

"I'm still talking to a lot of people," Mixon said. "The recruiting thing has been crazy the past couple of weeks. I've pretty much been taking it well. I talk to them before school, during lunch and after school. I'm not to the stressful part yet, but the hard part has been staying in contact with everybody."

ASHBURN, Va. -- At an event that featured three of the top 11 defensive prospects in the ESPN 150, third-rated offensive tackle Damian Prince of Forestville (Md.) Bishop McNamara impressed every bit as much as any of them Sunday at the Nike Football Training Camp outside of Washington, D.C.

Prince showed off a slimmed down frame -- he’s lost more than 30 pounds, he said, to reach about 285 -- and dominated in blocking drills against a stout group of defensive linemen.

Prince, No. 33 in the ESPN 150, put himself in position to rise over the upcoming months.

ASHBURN, Va. – The East Coast and mid-Atlantic states represented well on Sunday as eight players earned invites to The Opening at the Nike Football Training Camp outside of Washington, D.C. Defense ruled the day, led by two five-star prospects from Virginia.

Scott stood out among a field of backs who were overshadowed by the prospects at nearly every other position. He earned the attention of coaches for his strong play and versatility but missed the MVP award, which went to Vincent Lowe (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield), who also posted the top SPARQ score.

Scott committed to Penn State in February over an offer from Boston College.

ESPN national recruiting analyst Craig Haubert’s take: “He’s got a great frame, and what I like about him as a Penn State verbal, he’s a versatile player. He may not run by you, but he does a good job in route-running.”
