ESPN 100 center Elbert Robinson (Garland, Texas/Lakeview Centennial) has committed to LSU over Ohio State, Nebraska and Georgia Tech giving the Tigers the No. 54 overall player in the class of 2014.
"Me and [LSU coach Johnny Jones] have a great relationship and he asked to give him an opportunity" Robinson said.
This is huge for LSU because the talent rich state of Texas is prime recruiting territory for the Tigers and continues the strong recruiting ties Jones developed in the state when he was the head coach of North Texas.
"When coach Jones showed me how they use their big men I thought LSU would be the perfect fit" Robsinson said.
What he brings: At 6-foot-11 and a little more than 270 pounds, Robinson is a true center. He is wide body that moves well for his size and has great hands. Robinson is a lefty with excellent back-to-the-basket footwork. He has good moves and matching touch that allows him to score deep in the lane over, around or through contact. He can face and knock down the high-post jumper without hesitation. He is also a great passer showing he can kick out to open teammates with great accuracy and timing. Robinson is a good area rebounder and decent shot blocker as well. Robinson credits Dallas Seawolves AAU coach and mentor Lawrence Johns for the confidence with which he plays.
"Coach Johns believed in me when I didn't believe in myself, he has always had my back. He is like a second dad" Robinson said.
How he fits: Robinson provides the Tigers with a true low-post scoring and playmaking threat. He has all the tools to be a go to player on the low block and a dependable rebounder. Robinson has the potential to be a player opponents will have to double team to stop if he continues to develop at his current rate.
Who he reminds us of: Robinson scores in the post like Zach Randolph of the Memphis Grizzlies, another lefty low-post presence. Both have great feel and touch around the basket and can also face up in and around the lane and make life for opposing power forwards and centers extremely difficult.
How the class is shaping up: Robinson gives the Tigers their first ESPN 100 performer in the 2014 class. He joins under-the-radar PF Aaron Epps (Tioga, La./Tioga) who is very athletic. Jones is also working SG Dante Exum (Canberra, AUS/Australian Institute of Sport), so expect the Tigers to add to this class with more high level talent now that they have their low post anchor in place with Robinson.
