Clemson's options at TE without Cooper

It was a rough spring game for the Clemson Tigers, who lost tight end Sam Cooper to a knee injury.

"The biggest loss with Coop is just that veteran leadership, that savviness that comes with playing," coach Dabo Swinney said on the ACC coaches call Thursday. "And then also, he’s a 250-something pound thumper at the point of attack. So we’ve got to develop [young tight ends] in a hurry. We’ve got to ramp their development up. We were bringing them along because we had the luxury of doing that with a guy like Coop, but now their development is going to have to speed up and we’ve got to force feed them a little more than we would have. Athletically, they’re talented and capable of making plays, but we’re going to have to challenge them and grow them up in the run game."

UPDATE: One of the ripple effects of the ACC's grant of media rights approval is how the Big 12 could approach its future. The Big 12 made sure to keep its options open for possible expansion. The ACC's new deal may put a close to that possibility, while it leaves its options open for further expansion.

Tight end has been a vital part of Clemson's offense in recent years. This season it was supposed to be Sam Cooper's time to take over and follow in the footsteps of Michael Palmer, Dwayne Allen and Brandon Ford. Cooper unfortunately tore an ACL in during the team's spring game this past weekend according to ESPN ACC blogger Andrea Adelson. Clemson will now search for a new starting tight end during fall camp.
