Stoops talks Kentucky quarterbacks
By Vince Verhei
Mark Stoops would love to finish spring drills with a designated starting quarterback. However, he tells Mark Story of the Lexington Herald-Leader that he's not going to force himself to make a decision before he's ready.
Stoops said Wednesday that if one of the contenders was to pull clearly ahead, "we'll name them (the starter)," he said. "But we're not going to press that issue. ... we're going to take our time and make sure we get it right."
Maxwell Smith opened last season as the starter and played well before an ankle injury against South Carolina ended his season in September. Patrick Towles was expected to redshirt as a true freshman last season, but Smith's injury pushed him onto the field before he suffered an ankle injury of his own. Jalen Whitlow, pressed into action as a true freshman last year, has the best running ability of the three.
