Pitt's top two QBs entering spring

By Brent Sobleski

Pitt entered its first spring practice Tuesday with four quarterbacks competing to start. Four may have an opportunity to impress the staff, but the competition will likely come down to a pair of candidates.

Arizona (and Rutgers) transfer Tom Savage, redshirt freshman Chad Voytik, sophomore Trey Anderson and incoming freshman Tra'von Chapman are all vying to start at quarterback. Anderson and Chapman have already fallen behind Savage and Voytik.

"...Savage will compete this spring and fall primarily against redshirt freshman Chad Voytik for the starting job," Sam Werner of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote.

Pitt's coaching staff is comfortable with its top options.

“I'm really comfortable with both guys and their skill set," quarterbacks coach Brooks Bollinger told Chip Patterson of CBSSports.com. "I think they're both going to grow and develop obviously and I feel pretty comfortable with both of them as guys in the film room, studying and learning. I like where we are with both of them.”

Pitt head coach Paul Chryst discussed all four of his signal callers and what they bring to the offense:

"You’ve got Tommy Savage, who’s got the most experience, and that was as a freshman at a different school. (Savage played at Rutgers in 2009-10, where as a freshman he threw for 2,211 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was on scholarship at Arizona in 2011 but didn’t play in any games.) I like everything he’s done since he’s come on campus. He’s done everything you’d want him to do, now he has to go out and compete and earn his spot. Trey Anderson is a guy who’s been here and will be starting his third season. He was a backup last year and then you have two freshmen, a redshirt freshman, Chad Voytik, and a true freshman, Tra’Von Chapman. First and foremost they have to get comfortable with the offense and then once that happens, there is a quarterback competition because we haven’t named a starter. They’ll get a lot of work, I know that much."
