Kiffin still undecided on play caller

By Brent Sobleski

UPDATE: USC head coach Lane Kiffin still hasn't made a decision on who will call offensive plays on game day despite the Trojans beginning spring practice Tuesday.

"It has not (been determined)," Kiffin told Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News. "We're not worried about next fall. Our focus has been on our players."

The longer Kiffin goes without naming a play caller, the more likely it is he'll retain the duties.

USC's restructuring of its coaching staff is now complete. Clay Helton is the team's new offensive coordinator. But will the promotion also provide play calling duties? It's unlikely.

Despite the changes, the Trojans' hierarchy will remain relatively the same. Lane Kiffin has called the plays since he took over as the head coach of the Trojans' head coach. The coaches may look different and their roles have changed, yet the onus will still likely fall on Kiffin's shoulders:

Ted Miller
USC hirings done, but who will call plays?
"There's an overwhelming feeling around the program Kiffin should relinquish those responsibilities so he can better focus on the overall management of his team, something he fell short of doing during a horrible 2012 downward spiral from preseason No. 1. And his play-calling itself wasn't exactly inspired.
Here's a guess that the official word will be something to the tune of, 'It's collaborative ... with Kiffin having final say.'"
