Tulsa to Big East nearly a done deal

By Brent Sobleski

UPDATE: The Big East Conference -- or potentially the America 12 Conference -- finally stabilized to a degree after a new television deal was reached and the "Catholic 7" officially departed (with the Big East name in tow). The league's next step is believed to be the addition of a potential 12th member. Tulsa is finally nearing an agreement to join the (old) Big East.

"Tulsa will join the soon-to-be-renamed Big East Conference in 2014, while East Carolina will be added as a full member," sources told ESPN college football reporter Brett McMurphy.

"The league's presidents are expected to vote on adding the Golden Hurricane by next week, sources told ESPN's Andy Katz."

Tulsa had to wait for the Conference USA basketball tournament -- which it hosted -- to end before anything could become official with its new league. The school, meanwhile,  just hired its new athletic director last week which was another stumbling block. Conference USA is expected to replace Tulsa with Western Kentucky.

The league formerly known as the Big East also has an upcoming decision to make regarding its re-branding.

“The America, the Metro, Collegiate, the United -- it covered everything,” a source told Jeremy Fowler of CBSSports.com.
