What kind of QB does Cam want?

Thought for the day, from a reader of Gary Laney at GeauxTigerNation on ESPN.com: "With Brandon Harris, DeShone Kizer and Mason Rudolph looking like the three main quarterbacks on LSU's wish list, it looks like LSU is going in the direction of the mobile quarterback. Given LSU's history of getting more out of pocket passers (JaMarcus Russell, Matt Flynn) than run-first guys (Jordan Jefferson), should LSU be targeting runners?" Laney has plenty of thoughts on the Tigers, Cam Cameron, and the quarterbacks who will fit his system:

UPDATE: So Mike Gundy has, in what can only be described as a vulgar abuse of power, blocked Wes Lunt from transferring to any school not only in the Big 12, but in the SEC as well. What can Lunt do now?

ESPN football expert Joe Schad says that if Lunt has his heart set on attending Southern Mississippi, Tennessee, or Vanderbilt, he could file an appeal. Otherwise, it looks like Lunt's favored available options would be Louisville or Illinois.

--

UPDATE: Wes Lunt's potential top transfer option may not be available to him, because Oklahoma State reportedly blocked him from the possibility. But Lunt's currently visiting a campus which may eventually become his new home.

The crux of Mark Story's story in the Lexington Herald-Leader is new Kentucky coach Mark Stoops and offensive coordinator Neal Brown, and whether they can spur improvement in the Wildcats offense the way Hal Mumme did with Tim Couch in the mid-1990s. Notable for our purposes, however, are Story's thoughts on Kentucky's quarterback situation.

The most important position in Clancy Pendergast's defense? It might be the nose tackle, who is expected to fight off double-teams and control the gap on either side of the center. Redshirt sophomore Antwaun Woods was expected to take that spot for USC, and he showed up for spring drills in the best shape of his career, noticeably quicker and more mobile. However, Johnny Curren of WeAreSC at ESPN.com says two other players are also fighting for the job:

Michael DiRocco of GatorNation on ESPN.com says that the Florida Gators' biggest need in this year's recruiting class can be found on the offensive line.

The reason is simple: The Gators' starters are all upperclassmen. They will lose center Jonotthan Harrison, right guard Jon Halapio and guard/center/tackle Kyle Koehne after the 2013 season and left guard Max Garcia and right tackle Chaz Green after 2014.

The good news for Florida is that they already have commitments from OT Benjamin Knox (Deland, Fla./Deland), G Travaris Dorsey (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines) and G Joseph Paul (New Orleans/St. Augustine). DiRocco lists some other players Florida is looking at to fill their needs:

Top targets
"OT David Sharpe (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence), OT Alex Bars (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and OT Jamarco Jones (Chicago/De La Salle Institute)"

Perhaps motivated by the coming college football playoff, where strength of schedule will likely go a long way in determining who plays for the national championship, the Big Ten has announced that they will stop scheduling games against FCS teams. The ACC, however, has no plans to cancel such games -- and according to Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets athletic director Mike Bobinski, it's not just because they enjoy guaranteed wins over cupcake teams.

The SEC and strength of schedule

May, 17, 2013

If it's hard to pick two teams for a national championship game, it will be just as hard to pick four teams for a national playoff. Different teams from different conferences can have wildly different schedules. In the SEC, for example, 14 teams will play only eight conference games each, while the same number of teams in the Big Ten will play nine games. Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated says that will complicate things for the selection committee.
